China Unicom decided to lock some iPhones that violate the company’s rules from December 1. People were buying the iPhones and a service package as a whole and then selling them off separately. China Unicom wanted to stop this by closing down the contracts.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has asked China Unicom not to do this, although no explanation was given for the request.
China Unicom users would have their iPhones locked and their bundled phone numbers suspended if the two were used separately. This restriction has been put into new contracts since December 1. Now it has been asked to lift the ban.
English.EastDay.com reported industry insiders as saying the restriction was meant to prevent China Unicom’s iPhone contract users from subscribing to other telcos such as China Mobile.
