Traffic accidents and overloaded lorries are seriously damaging Shanghai’s bridges, according to a report by China Daily. Each of the three bridges over the Huangpu River, the Nanpu, Yangpu and Xupu, handle more than100,000 vehicles a day, an increase of 10 per cent over last year’s average. One truck carrying 38 tons of freight was recently discovered crossing the Xupu, which has a weight limit of 12 tons.
It costs Yn4m-5m a year to maintain each bridge, said Chen Jianhua, manager of the Shanghai Huangpu River Tunnels and Bridges Development Co.
