Lenovo has said it is in preliminary discussions with third parties regarding possible investments and acquisitions.
‘The directors wish to emphasize that the company does look at different business investment opportunities from time to time,’ China’s largest personal computer maker by shipments said in a statement.
However, Lenovo said there haven’t yet been any negotiations carried out or agreements related to acquisitions.
The statement came after Lenovo’s shares in Hong Kong surged on reports the company is in acquisition talks.
Last week, Fujitsu’) Chief Financial Officer Kazuhiko Kato told Dow Jones that his company has been approached by Lenovo for the possible purchase of Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ retail PC business mainly in Europe.
Now it is reported Lenovo has bid about $833 million for the acquisition of Positivo Informatica, the leader in the manufacture and sale of computers in Brazil, according to Folha de S.Paulo, Brazil’s Portuguese-language largest newspaper by circulation.
Rival Dell is said to have an interest in the acquisition, too.
The real controller of the Brazilian company hopes to get a selling price of at least $1.250 billion, much lower than the earlier price of $1.958 billion, citing the newspaper. The two main reasons are that the value of the dollar has been recently on the rise and Positivo Informatica shares are slippping in price.
Positivo Informatica said in a statement with the Brazilian stock authority that it would think over any proposal, only if the most favorable interests of its shareholders and it were secured.
