Major expansion at Ningbo

The port of Ningbo in Zhejiang province said it would invest Yn6bn in the next few years to expand handling capacity. In 2001 it handled 126.7m tons of goods and 1.21m teu of containers – a year-on-year increase of 8 per cent and 35 per cent respectively.

Construction has started on the second phase of an oil wharf in Ningbo. When the whole project is completed in August this year, the wharf will become the largest oil transfer centre in China, capable of handling 40m tonnes of oil annually. It will be able to accommodate 250,000 dwt ships. China’s existing largest oil berth with a handling capacity of 20m tons is also located in Ningbo.
