New Foxconn death after boss Gou's Shenzhen visit

A Foxconn Technology employee jumped to his death at the Taiwan-based company’s Shenzhen plant on Wednesday night, just hours after chairman Terry Gou apologized for the recent number of suicides and promised improved welfare, state media reported. This is the tenth such death at Foxconn’s Longhua, Shenzhen facility so far this year. Not all the deaths have been classified as suicides and two of the 12 employees who jumped survived their suicide attempts. Gou, chairman of Foxconn’s parent Hon Hai Precision, earlier said that the suicides were more of a social problem and the company should not be held to blame, noting that the suicide rate at Foxconn was much lower than the country’s average. However, on his inspection of the Shenzhen plant, Gou said the company would adjust employee’s salaries and finance the establishment of a hospital to provide professional therapy and counseling.
