That’s "china" with a small "c".
A small bowl made of Chinese porcelain was sold in Beijing for US$19.4 million! The price made it the most expensive piece of art ever sold in Asia. Produced during the Qing Dynasty, the bowl – only 11cm across – was originally made for the emperor Qianlong (1736-1795).
The Times story also has an interesting footnote: A quarter of the buyers at Christie’s auctions are Chinese, and the number is growing.
