Nissan plans to double China capacity by 2012

Nissan (7201.TYO) Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn announced Monday plans to double the automaker’s China capacity to 1.2 million units by 2012, Reuters reported. Speaking at the opening of a new SUV plant in Zhengzhou, China, Ghosn said Nissan, which operates a joint venture with Dongfeng Motor Group (0498.HK), hopes to eventually achieve a 10%  share of China’s auto market, the world’s largest. In addition to the new plant in Zhengzhou, Nissan is planning to expand its capacity in two other mainland plants in Guangdong and Hubei provinces. The goal of 1.2 million units by 2012 adds an additional 200,000 units to Nissan’s previous target announced in May, said Ghosn. Government statistics continue to show strong growth in China’s car market in August which posted a 60% increase year-on-year.
