Progress has been reported on several new railway projects in China. The electric line between Chongqing and Huaihua, Hunan province is currently on fast-track construction and has already used up nearly Yn20bn, one-sixth of its total investment, according to Xinhua. The project is one of the government's 10 major infrastructure projects for western development and will cut the rail distance between Chongqing and destinations in eastern China by up to 500km.
The Asian Development Bank has provided a loan of US$200m towards the construction of a new railway line between Ganzhou, Jiangxi province, and Longyan in Fujian province. The 227km line provides a direct link between Fujian and the Beijing- Kowloon railway and will also provide lowcost transport to 4m rural people.
The Ministry of Railways is planning to build a second railway in Tibet, China Daily said. The new railway, construction of which will not start until after the completion of the line from Golmud to Lhasa, will link Lhasa to the railway system in Yunnan province.
