Beijing’s first rubbish-burning power plant is to be built in Gaoantun in the city’s Chaoyang district. The US-registered Golden State (Holding) Group will take a controlling stake in the US$82m venture, of which US$45m will be covered by loans provided by the Spanish government. Two furnaces and a generator with an installed capacity of 25,000kW will be installed at the plant.
The project was given government approval in November 2000 but construction was postponed due to a lack of funds and public concerns about pollution.
Beijing’s` generates 11,000 tonnes of rubbish every day, of which only 40 per cent is treated. The remainder is dumped in open ground in the suburbs, seriously polluting groundwater, air and soil.
