Tesla Inc.’s new vehicle assembly facility in Shanghai is expected to begin operations this May. Chen Mingbo, the head of Shanghai’s Economic and Information Technology Commission, said at a meeting of the National People’s Congress that part of the facility’s production line would be up and running in May 2019, reported Reuters.
The Shanghai government has supported the construction of the facility, aiming for the project to be fully operational within two years.
It will be China’s first fully foreign-owned auto plant and could signify a shift with China starting to open up its auto market.
