Shanghai will spend Yn100bn on rail transport projects in the current five-year plan (2001-05), according to a white paper released by the municipal government. The city intends to build a total of 212km of subway, elevated railway and magnetic railway lines by 2005.
The paper predicts that the number of vehicles on Shanghai's roads will increase from 1.04m to 1.5m by 2005. However, the Shanghai Urban Transport Bureau hopes that public transport will carry nearly 26 per cent of local traffic volume by 2005, up from 21 per cent in 2000. The urban rail network is expected to carry 3.2m passengers a day by 2005, up from 900,000 currently.
