Under the headline, "Workers of the world unite and go shopping", the official China Daily reported that the main question on the minds of urban masses was not strikes and demonstrations any more, but "whether one should stay at home, book into a resort or seek retail therapy". It reported an online poll by Sina.com showing two-thirds of participants voting to stay at home to avoid China's crammed transport networks, and a full 80% saying they would celebrate May Day by shopping.
