The newly built Songpu Bridge in Harbin, capital of northeast China’s Heilongjiang province, has just opened. English People’s Daily reports the 4-kilometer bridge, spanning the Songhua River, has eight lanes and takes about 5 minutes to cross. It can carry up to 9,800 vehicles during peak hours.
The bridge thus seriously improves traffic flow. But there is another aspect of its construction.
The Journal of East China Normal University, Shanghai has published a paper by Qin Yong-liang and Yuan Wen at the School of Resources and Environment Science which analyses the characteristics of environmental flow in plain river network areas.
The flow data at the Songpu Bridge on Huangpu River was used to assess the environmental flow situation in the Shanghai area. This research might provide a new way to understand, describe and calculate environmental flow through river management.
