Sonia Gandhi begins five-day visit to China

India's Congress Party Chief Sonia Gandhi began a five-day visit to China on Thursday at the invitation of the Chinese Communist Party, AFP reported. Gandhi's visit is being seen as an effort to allay Chinese concerns over the Indian government's growing partnership with the US. India has a nuclear accord with the US, which would allow the country to get nuclear fuel and technology, though it has not yet signed the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Beijing has remained noncommittal on support for the deal, which requires the approval of the 45-member-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group. Gandhi is scheduled to meet with President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao Friday.
