Sony Corporation plans to open a research and development division in the audiovisual equipment sector in Shanghai early this year. The unit, which will report to the Japanese group’s holding company in Beijing, is designed to bring goods quickly to the Chinese market. It will also develop Chineselanguage software for digital camcorders and digital televisions for the local market and will perform some of the group’s basic software research.
