Spring Festival fires kill 35, cause $4m worth of damage

The number of fatalities during the Spring Festival holiday was almost halved from last year at 35, state media reported citing the Ministry of Public Security. "No single accidental fire killed more than three people or seriously injured more than 10," it said. The ministry said 7,480 fires broke out between February 12 and February 19 caused by "fireworks and appliance accidents" leading to losses of US$4.17 million. During Spring Festival last year, a skyscraper in Beijing’s landmark CCTV complex was razed following an unauthorized fireworks display held by several CCTV officials. One firefighter died and several others were injured when trying to bring the blaze under control.
