Prosecutors are proceeding with an espionage case against Zhao Yan, a New York Times researcher, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing the defense lawyer, who said the trial could begin within six weeks. The Chinese man, who worked for the Times' Beijing bureau, was detained in September 2004, and charged with "providing state secrets abroad". The government hasn't given any details but Zhao is believed to have been detained in connection with a Times report last year about plans by former President Jiang Zemin to give up a key Communist Party military post, the report said.
