China bought 1.3m ounces of platinum in 2001, making it the world’s leading consumer of platinum for jewellery, Johnson Matthey said in Platinum Review. This was 18 per cent more than in the previous year. Nearly all of the metal bought in China is imported.
The precious metals company said that China’s sales in the first quarter of this year pointed to continued strong sales growth in 2002. The rise in consumption of platinum followed a big promotion campaign led by the London-based Platinum Guild, which has opened an office in Shanghai.
