Takashimaya department store will open a branch in Shanghai in 2012, company president Koji Suzuki said.
Takashimaya, which closed its New York branch in June, currently has two overseas stores in Singapore and Taipei. The Shanghai store will be the first on the mainland.
"Sales from Asian countries will make up for the shrinking domestic market," Suzuki said.
The Mainichi Daily News reported Suzuki as saying, "We would like to offer quality products that are satisfying enough to make our customers believe they are worth more than what they actually cost. It would be nice to hear people say, ‘After all, department stores offer better products.”’
