Chinese tech powerhouse Tencent is set to deepen ties with the UK by forming a range of cultural and creative partnerships with British institutions, the South China Morning Post reports, as China’s tech industry pivots away from the US.
The owner of social media platform WeChat signed a memorandum of understanding with the UK Department of International Trade in London, outlining collaboration efforts including a three-year partnership between the BBC and Tencent Penguin Pictures in areas of content development, co-production, and marketing of documentaries.
“Openness, partnership and sharing at a global level have become our common vision for the future of human development in this digital era, within this context, the [memorandum] is of great significance,” senior executive vice president of Tencent Lau Sang Yee, said in a statement on the UK partnership.
