I agree with the thrust of the post below on human rights. It is undeniable that China has problems in this regard, although it is all a matter of degree and subjectivity, and the trendline on China’s human rights situation is dramatically and speedily positive.
But I would say in response to Almerindo’s post that having China as a member of this UN human rights body is not necessarily a bad thing. It could be, for instance, that its membership can be used by both external and domestic players to put extra pressure on China to conform to internationally accepted practices. My guess is that that is what will happen. China is surely going to be more under the spotlight as a member of the human rights body. The next time a journalist is arrested, I can see the wire story now: China, a member of the UN Human Rights Commission, today denied there was any contradiction between the arrest of journalist xx and its watchdog role in support of international human rights.
