The White House has recommended that China Mobile, one of China’s three major state-owned telecoms companies, be restricted from the US market on the grounds that its links to Beijing pose a national security threat, the Financial Times reports.
A Tuesday statement from the telecommunications branch of the US Department of Commerce read that “after significant engagement with China Mobile, concerns about increased risks to US law enforcement and national security interests were unable to be resolved.”
“This application raises substantial and unacceptable national security and law enforcement risks in the current national security environment,” the department said, referring to a 2011 request made by China Mobile to do business in the US.
This is just the latest example of US political opposition to Chinese telecommunications firms, with companies such as Huawei and ZTE facing intense pushback from policymakers in recent months due to their alleged ties with the Chinese government.
