Shanghai will spend Yn12bn on upgrading its power grid in the next two years after a series of shortages and breakdowns were experienced during this summer's heatwave. The upgrades should allow the grid to handle double current peak demand, said Shanghai Morning Post. Many companies were instructed to halt production by the municipal government.
As part of the plan, Yn3bn will be spent on electrical engineering equipment and network equipment in 2003. In addition, the Waigaoqiao power plant will bring two new generating units into operation in the second half of next year.
