US report calls China protectionist

A US government report released Wednesday accused China of enacting various barriers to US trade, including restricting trading rights, promoting protectionist government procurement and hoarding raw materials, the Financial Times reported. While China has lowered official tariffs and quotas, the report said, "Eight years after China’s WTO accession, many US industries complain that they face significant non-tariff barriers to trade." The report added, "These barriers include, for example, regulations that set high thresholds for entry into service sectors such as banking, insurance and telecommunications…and the use of questionable sanitary and phytosanitary measures to control import volumes."
