Winter weather kills 4 in Xinjiang

Severe winter weather in Xinjiang has killed four people and damaged 100,000 homes, AFP reported, citing state media. Further extreme weather is expected over the next several days, with blizzards forecast and temperatures set to plunge to -42 degrees Celsius. More than 530,000 people are said to have been affected by the weather, and more than 15,200 livestock have died of exposure or starvation. State media put direct economic losses from the weather at US$29 million.
