Dear readers, there are times when one despairs and humor will not rise to the occasion. Such a day is today. UK voters decided to leave the EU, although, irrelevantly, a solid majority of younger people who will experience the consequences for longer voted to remain. As Brezhnev once said, the problem with elections is that you just cannot be sure of the result. Our view: a sad day. The consequences could be shocking. This will impact on the stability and security of Europe, and on the global economy beyond. It is hard for us to see how the Brexit helps Britishers, and with Enid Blyton unlikely at this to return from the grave, the desire to revive the golden glow of an English yore seems plain foolish.
How does it impact on China? At the least, it probably makes it even less likely that the future of UK-China relations is particularly “Golden” because it significantly reduces the importance of the UK on the world scene. Oh, Famous Five! Where are you in our hour of need? The sell-off today in global markets today is probably overdone, but then again, it’s a brave new world out there. Trump odds are no doubt shortening.
