Zhejiang is proposing the construction of a second Hangzhou Bay bridge for rail transport as a way to forge closer ties between its industrial sector and Shanghai’s economic development, South China Morning Post reported. Zhou Jiangyong, chairman of the Ningbo Hangzhou Bay New Zone Administration, said the bridge would provide a rail link between Shanghai and Ningbo’s northern district at an estimated cost of US$4.42 billion. The 36-kilometer Hangzhou Bay Bridge, the world’s longest sea bridge, opened in May 2008 after five years of construction, and reduced the travel time between Shanghai and Ningbo to two hours from four hours. The Zhejiang government and the Ministry of Railways are studying the feasibility of the project, while Zhou added it would likely be written in China’s 12th Five Year Plan for economic and social development.
