More than 100 dead or missing in northeast China flooding

Floods and landslides in northeastern China have left more than 100 people dead or missing after 10 days of heavy rainfall, AFP reported, citing state media. The downpours in Jilin province have cut off roads and left villages inaccessible, while communications and water supplies have been disrupted as well. Meanwhile, about 37,000 houses have been swept away, 125,000 have been damaged and 592,000 residents have been evacuated from waterlogged areas. Until now, torrential rains have mostly affected China’s southern region, swelling the Yangtze River. Since the beginning of year, flooding in the south has left more than 1,000 dead and hundreds missing, causing more than US$28 billion of damage.
