China, neighbors to develop OS

China, Japan and South Korea announced they signed an agreement to develop a new computer operating system based on Linux to compete with globally dominant Microsoft Windows. Officials from the three countries signed the agreement in Beijing. It stated that the three governments will promote Linux, an open-source, freely modifiable operating system, for government computer systems. They also planned to promote development of open-source operating systems by Asia-based technology firms.
