China will invest a record RMB 18.8 billion (US$2.3 billion) this year to upgrade the eastern power grid and relieve growing power shortages in the booming coastal areas, state media reported.
To ease tight supply, East China Power Grid merged the southeastern Fujian power grid into its network covering Shanghai city, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui provinces.
It also planned to put 23 generating units with a total capacity of 7,790 megawatts into operation this year.
