Former top Macau prosecutor detained boarding ferry to Hong Kong

Macau’s Commission Against Corruption arrested former senior commission official Ho Chio-meng on Saturday night as he was boarding a ferry to Hong Kong, South China Morning Post reported, citing local media and a statement from the commission. Ho had served as chief prosecutor following the 1999 handover of the former Portuguese colony to China until 2014. The Post asserted that initial investigations showed that Ho and other former officials at the commission had allegedly pocketed nearly US$5.5 million from contracts worth more than MOP167 million (US$20.85 million) granted between 2004 and 2014. A statement released late Saturday night said “various coercive measures” had been applied to some of the suspects.
