More headaches for Huawei

Following on from reports this week that the US and German governments are pursuing laws to limit or outright ban involvement of Chinese telecoms giant Huawei in domestic markets, Canada is now also weighing up its options.

Canada is in the process of studying the effects and influence of Huawei products such as its world-leading 5G technology, but has not committed to its exclusion yet.

In response to the reports, the Chinese ambassador in Ottawa Liu Shaye warned Canada that “if the government does ban Huawei from participating in the 5G network, then as for what kind of repercussions there will be, I’m not sure, but I believe there will be repercussions,” Reuters reports.

Elsewhere, the University of Oxford also announced that it has ceased to accept funding from Huawei, following the scepticism of the UK government towards the company.

Also on Thursday it was revealed that the Polish citizen arrested on suspicion of spying via ties with Huawei was an advisor to former Prime Minister Beata Szydlo.
