[photopress:chaingsaen_1.jpg,full,alignright]According to the Thailand Research Fund infrastructure links and warehousing services remain the key stumbling blocks to Sino-Thai overland trade.
Associate Prof Ruth Banomyong of the Department of International Business, Logistics and Transport Management of Thammasat University said that despite agreements by Thailand and China to develop transport connections and warehousing services, little progress has been made, particularly for the land route between Thailand and Laos in Chiang Khong district of Chiang Rai.
Water transport also poses problems because of China’s water-discharge policy and the Mekong River’s shallowness in certain seasons.
Cross-border trade to China currently takes place in the upper North from border customs checkpoints at Chiang Saen, Chiang Khong and Mae Sai, with exports through Chiang Saen, mainly by water, representing about 70 per cent of the total.
