If you aren’t outraged, you haven’t been paying attention. A series of startling exposes this week revealed the incomparable arrogance of foreigners and foreign companies in China. Public enemy # 2: the Danish. A sleuthy netizen snapped a photo of several badly behaved Danish men peeing on the highway, and the Chinese police are now in hot pursuit. Apparently, the culprits had been watching car races and drinking beer. Worse, they were grinning! Why can’t the Danish follow the Chinese example and relieve themselves where appropriate?
But this offense looks trivial compared to the gall of one electronics giant. After CCTV criticized Apple’s repair policies, Apple did not even have the decency to humble itself before the Chinese public. Instead it responded with the sunny statement that it “makes outstanding products … and offers incredible user experience.” What on earth makes it think that? Apple’s arrogance encouraged Chinese media to band together, with everyone from the Monkey King to People’s Daily going after a bite.
We at CER would like to express our strong support for state media in its unrelenting pursuit of truth. Clearly this is among the most serious product issues confronting Chinese people today. Having different standards for China and foreign markets is totally unacceptable. Apple, you have hurt the Chinese people’s feelings.
