The over 30-year history of China’s development zone has been accompanied by the progress of China’s reform and opening-up in all aspects and at multiple levels, which started with the establishment of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone and expanded to involve other coastal cities, cities along the Yangtze River and border cities, and further expanded westward.August 26 of 1980 witnessed the Chinese government’s approval for economic zones in cities including Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Shantou and Xiamen; in April 1988, the State Council granted approval for the Hainan Provincial Special Economic Zone; in the 1990s, the Pudong New Area in Shanghai Municipality and various national economic and technology development zones that aimed at absorbing foreign investments and accelerating China’s exports came into being.

Earth Times shows how the development zone should pay attention to the integration of the infrastructure construction and the development of new urban areas at the planning stage, and keep an eye on the protection of the original ecological environment.
