China’s military is suspected of interfering with US government satellites in 2007 and 2008, AFP reported. AFP obtained a draft of a forthcoming report by the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission that said hackers accessed NASA satellites four times, and on two occasions were able to issue commands to the satellites — although they did not do so. The report is set to be submitted to Congress on November 16. The hackers accessed the satellites via Norway’s Svalbard Satellite Station. The satellites monitor the earth’s climate and terrain, but the hackings raised concerns that more sensitive satellites could be accessed and potentially destroyed. The report also accused China of state-sponsored cyber attacks and industrial espionage.
