China announced the opening of its first DNA databank. Guangzhou No 12 People's Hospital and the UK's University of Birmingham plan to collaborate in creating health profiles for 50,000 Guangzhou residents within the next five years. Information on participants� medical history, lifestyle and occupation will be catalogued along with a blood sample, containing their DNA. The information will be used to study genetic factors behind diseases in China.
