A new food-safety reporting system will go into effect on August 8, exactly a year before the start of the 2008 Olympics, the Wall Street Journal reported. According to the plan, announced by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, products will be monitored from their origin through to distribution, with reports including details of any food-safety accidents. The announcement of the new monitoring system was one of a number of steps China has taken this week to demonstrate increased commitment to food safety. In separate announcements Thursday, China banned diethylene glycol, a thickening agent in antifreeze, for use in toothpaste, and the State Food and Drug Administration announced a new process for new drugs to be approved by a special panel, rather than a single person, before going to market.
