China on Wednesday declared a “war on pollution” and promised sweeping reforms to promote sustainable growth, South China Morning Post reported, citing Premier Li Keqiang’s speech to the opening session of the National People’s Congress. Li told the national legislature that the country would fight pollution with the same determination it has mustered in battling poverty. The initiatives, outlined as part of the State Council’s annual work report, would limit coal use, reduce emissions that pollute the air and water, and promote the use of hydropower and nuclear power, among other measures.
