Hao Yang, a deputy director of disease control at the Ministry of Health, said a new assessment for 2005 showed HIV figures were down from 2003 numbers, reported the South China Morning Post. While the reduced number from the 850,000 HIV cases previously reported was not announced, sources said it was reckoned to be down by 20%, Officials said the new figures were now being assessed by the World Health Organization and UNAids. Hao said the new figures were more accurate because more HIV tests were carried out, and the calculation model was better.
