A nine-year-old girl has become the 10th person in China to die from bird flu, state media reported. The girl, who passed away on Monday in the southeastern province of Zhejiang, is said to have visited the home of relatives whose chickens died while she was there. Coming just days after the ninth fatality, Chinese authorities warned that the latest death reinforced concerns about a major outbreak of the H5N1 strain of the virus. Right now is spring, when there is a high chance of bird flu outbreaks due to the frequent movement of migratory birds, said China’s deputy agriculture minister Yin Chengjie. Questions have been asked of how the virus is spreading after the ninth fatality took place in Guangdong, where there have been no reports of an outbreak in poultry.
